Economic Aspects of Paraíba

Located in the Northeast Region, the state of Paraíba has a territorial extension of 56,469.466 square kilometers, being inhabited by 3,766,528 people. In 2008, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Paraíba reached the mark of 22.2 billion reais, corresponding to 0.8% of the Brazilian GDP. At the regional level, this contribution was 6.4%.

The composition of the GDP of the state of Paraíba is as follows:

Agriculture: 5.6%.
Industry: 22.4%.
Services: 72%.

The services sector is responsible for the largest revenue collection in the state. Tourism is one of the elements that strengthen this sector of the economy. João Pessoa, state capital, has an excellent hotel structure to receive visitors from various parts of the country who seek to enjoy the region's natural beauty.

Corresponding to 22.4% of the state GDP, the industry is poorly diversified.
In Paraíba, the main segments of this sector of the economy are: textile, food, metallurgy and leather products. Campina Grande has stood out as a technology center for exporting computer programs.

With a large part of the territory located in the sub-region of the northeastern hinterland, agriculture in Paraíba is developed in the territorial portions located in the Zona da Mata. The main crops are: rice, beans, coffee, cassava, corn, cashew nuts, black pepper, sisal, pineapple and, mainly, sugar cane.

Cotton fabrics and garments: 44%.
Rubber shoes: 33%.
Cane sugar: 4%.
Granite: 3%.
Others: 16%.


Imports: 396.3 million dollars:

Yarns and fabrics: 23%.
Footwear: 11%.
Steel products: 10%.
Petroleum coke: 8%.
Wheat: 6%.
Textile machinery: 5%.
Tires: 4%.
Graphic machines: 3%.
Others: 30%.
