Brazilian painter born in Mariana, MG, contemporary of Antônio Francisco Lisboa, Aleijadinho, and considered the greatest exponent of baroque painting from Minas Gerais and Brazil. His first known work is the incarnation of two images of Christ for the sanctuary of Nosso Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, in Congonhas MG (1781). He carried out a refined, fruitful and significant work in the decoration of churches and the panels and canvases he left in 18 churches in Minas Gerais. Gerais, his most famous work is the painting of the ceiling of the church of São Francisco de Assis in Ouro Preto, representing the assumption of Virgin.
He did several works together with Aleijadinho, and like his contemporaries, he was inspired by missal prints and engravings, but it knew how to enrich its molds with imagination, using typical Baroque features: columns, pediments, volutes, shells, vases and flowers. Recognized for his talent in life, he received a certificate as a professor of the arts of architecture and painting (1821), the year in which he requested the creation of a school of fine arts in Mariana. His last known work is A Ceia, from the noble hall of Colégio do Caraça, completed shortly before his death, in Mariana.
