The region where it is located Honduras was inhabited by Mayan civilization before the arrival of the Spaniards in 1502. Honduras liberated itself from Spain only in 1821 and joined Mexico.
independence and dictatorship
Honduras became part of the Central American Federation, and got his independence in 1838. The country experienced a dictatorship between the years 1932 to 1949 and, after this period, there were fragile governments, interrupted by military coups.
The election of a civilian president did not take place until 1981. In the 1980s, Nicaragua, a neighboring country, had power taken by guerrillas called Sandinistas. Honduras supported the cons, as the anti-Sandinist rebels were called.

Based in Honduras and with the support of the United States, the rebels attacked Nicaragua, and this created tensions between the two countries. Nicaragua and Honduras compete for the gulf of Fonseca, on the Pacific coast.
