Brazilian footballer born in Pau Grande, municipality of Majé, RJ, one of the main names in the sport at Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas and the Brazilian national team, where he won two world titles (1958/1962). He joined the Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas in Rio de Janeiro (1953) and defended the Brazilian team in three world championships (1958/1962/1966).
In his second World Cup, he met singer Elza Soares, an artist who represented Brazil at the event, and married her after breaking up his marriage to his first wife Nair. Known as one of the greatest right-wingers in the world, with spectacular dribbling, after giving many glory to Botafogo, he moved to Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, from São Paulo (1966), ended his professional career at Flamengo and retired from football participating in exhibition matches (1973).
His spectacular plays inspired the verses of Vinícius de Morais, in the poem The Angel with Crooked Legs, and a film by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Garrincha, Joy of the People (1963). Away from football, he was overcome by alcoholism in the last years of his life and died in Rio de Janeiro, RJ.
