The economy of the State of Bahia is diversified, with activities in agriculture, industry, mining, tourism and services, all of these account for 36% of all Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the region. North East.
In agriculture, Bahia stands out nationally as a producer of cocoa, sisal, castor beans, coconut, beans and cassava. In the vicinity of Ilhéus there are favorable conditions for the production of cocoa, in addition to presenting significant production of corn and sugar cane. In cattle raising, it has great national prominence, occupying sixth place in Brazil, goats have one of the largest herds in the country. Recently, the State has emerged as an important soy producer. In the industrial sector, it operates especially in the chemical, petrochemical, agribusiness, IT, automobile and parts sectors.
In extractive activity, more precisely in mineral extraction, the State develops great potential in exploration of oil, in addition to gold, copper, magnesite, chromite, rock salt, barite, manganese, lead and baby powder.
An economic activity developed in the state of Bahia of great prominence is tourism, since the state has enormous possibilities as urban tours or in natural places such as beaches, islands, plateaus between others. This activity alone employs at least 88 thousand people directly. The provision of services is a branch that grows more and more in the State and occupies great importance in its economy.
