After the death of King Augustus II in 1733, former King Stanislaus I sought to return to the Polish throne. With the support of his son-in-law, French King Louis XV, Stanislaus I opposed the son of Augustus II, who in turn had the support of the Austrian Emperor Charles VI and Queen Anna of Russia.
During the election that would settle the succession question, the majority of the Polish nobility supported the return of Stanislaus I. However, a minority bestowed the title of Emperor of Poland on Augustus III, son of the predecessor king. Unsupported by military troops and pressured by Russian forces during the Siege of Danzig (1734), Stanislaus I was forced to seek refuge in France.
The war spread along the River Rhine and into Italy, as the kings of Spain and Sardinia began to support King Louis XV against Augustus III. Spain aimed to recover the territories in Sicily and Naples, lost in the signing of the Peace of Utrecht. Sardinia, on the other hand, sought to recover the territories of Lombardy.
Initially, Spanish forces managed to control Sicily and Naples. The French, on another front, provisionally conquered the territories of the Duchy of Lorraine. The conflicts of the succession war were resolved with the establishment of the Treaty of Vienna in 1738, which reorganized the Polish dynastic question.
Stanislaus I renounced the throne and obtained in exchange the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar which, after his death, were inherited by the French Crown. The Duke of Lorraine was granted the right of possession under Tuscany. Spain secured possession under Naples and Sicily and, in return, donated the Duchy of Parma to the Austrians. Austria secured its control over Lombardy and was compensated by the French. Sardinia came out of the conflict without any kind of gain or loss.
