The first martial arts emerged in the Far East and initially represented techniques for handling melee weapons.

These variations of fights also involve self-defense processes with or without weapons, which explains the name martial or warriors.

Later, martial arts were transformed into sports activities, which had aim to improve body and mind. Techniques learned as a sport can also be used in the context of self-defense.

From 1200 onwards, the samurai, warriors par excellence, developed several hand-to-hand combat techniques that aimed to defeat the opponent even when they did not have weapons in their possession.

Over the centuries, professionalism in martial arts has increased and resulted in the practice of jiu-jitsu (meaning: smoothness + technique). Jiu-jitsu was the technique that originated or martial art, judo - created by the Japanese Jigoro Kano.

Judo has been practiced at world championships since 1956, and in 1964 it became part of the Olympics.

Unlike judo, karate is not intended for hand-to-hand confrontation. The objective is to knock the opponent down through blows made with the hands and feet. Karate emerged in 1920, through its creator Gichin Funakoshi, and began to be practiced in championships in 1970.

A more recent martial art is aikido, founded by Morihei Ueshiba, and is a martial art seen as a fusion of various martial arts of Japanese origin.
